    Responsible for processing and patient care management of medical patients. The Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) works collaboratively with attending physician, PCP, and or Hospitalists and utilizes a team approach in the care of the patient. The Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) may diagnose illness and physical condition and perform therapeutic and corrective measures. Assesses the physical and psychosocial status of patients by interview, health history, physical exam and diagnostic tests. Participates in quality improvement initiatives. Carries out responsibilities with minimal need for supervision and guidance within the scope of practice. Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.



    • Responsibilities:

      1. Assists in the care for the patient who has decompensated.
      2. Identifies healthcare needs and the status of patients.
      3. Obtains comprehensive health histories, performs complete physical examinations, enters orders for therapy.
      4. Demonstrates excellence in the completion of patient history and physical exams and assessments.
      5. Appropriately initiates orders for care of the patient.
      6. Makes decision to transfer to higher level care.
      7. Discusses appropriately the treatment of the patient with the primary attending as well as the critical care attending if needed.
      8. Responsible for medical record documentation and related paperwork and ordering of tests/procedures and subspecialty consultations if necessary.
      9. Ensures medical record documentation meets NEMG, State and Federal guidelines, clearly documenting patient diagnosis and medical information required for legal and billing purposes.
      10. Participates in the remote assessment of patients through rothman index alerts as well as sepsis alerts.
      11. Serves as a liaison and interacts with ancillary services to ensure timely and comprehensive care for all patients.
      12. Serves as a liaison to patients and their families.
      13. Shares the responsibility of carrying the RRT pager on a rotating basis that will notify them of rapid responses as well as venous access requests.
      14. Performs invasive venous access procedures (midlines).
      15. Maintains standards of sterility and follows midline guidelines based on the institution policy.
      16. Acts as a clinical resource for residents and fellows, and as a role model/preceptor for PA students. Maximizes opportunities in the clinical setting for informal education of staff, patients, and families.
      17. Actively research’s information on patient medical conditions and shares information with the other team members and students.
      18. Participates in educations conferences and attends Grand Rounds as time permits.
      19. Participates in a level of continuing medical educations- CME activity annually that improves the quality of care provided.

      Patient Safety:

      1. Immediately reports any concern about patient safety to manager/administration.
      2. Follow midline policy of the institution.
      3. Reports any adverse or potentially adverse events related to patient care.


      1. Follows all NEMG policies and procedures.
      2. Responds to pages in a timely manner and notifies manager if pager is lost or stolen.
      3. Completes mandatory training requirements related to HIPAA, Emergency Management, patient safety, or as assigned.
      4. Ensures the required licensure and certifications are kept up to date and that NEMG always has copies of current licenses and certificates.

      5. Bills for all procedures performed and documented.

      6. Attends required team meetings.

      7. Dresses and acts professionally at all times.




    APRN: Educational preparation at the Master's level of nursing. Clinical privileges required when performing certain advanced practice activities Graduation from an accredited Advanced Nurse Practitioner program required. Certified as a APRN by the National Commission on Certification of Nurse Practitioners. Must hold a valid Connecticut medical license, Connecticut Controlled Substance Registration and Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Certification.


    Physician Assistant: Graduation from an accredited Physician Associate program required. Certified as a Physician Associate by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Associates. Both hold a valid Connecticut medical license, Connecticut Controlled Substance Registration and Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Certification




    One (1) to two (2) years caring for patients preferred.




    Excellent clinical, interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.




    MMR is required. Varivax (chicken pox vaccine) or evidence of prior chicken pox is required. Hepatitis B (or signed declination) is required for those with potential exposure to blood/body fluids. Tdap and influenza vaccination are strongly encouraged.
