The Molecular Diagnostic Laboratory is a CLIA certified laboratory that specializes in the development and performance of clinical molecular diagnostic assays primarily in Hematology/Oncology. Under the supervision of the Laboratory Director, Manager, and Section Coordinator, the Molecular Assay Development Technologist is responsible for performing a wide variety of routine and complex molecular testing to ensure quality patient care. Additional responsibilities include optimization of current laboratory tests and development of new laboratory tests following CAP and CLIA guidelines. Responsibilities will be split, approximately 60% clinical testing and 40% assay development.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Demonstrates technical competency in performing a variety of molecular testing to ensure that accurate and timely data can be provided for good patient care.
    • 1.1 Assesses the specimen according to established procedural criteria, documents any specimen problems, and requests new specimen(s) when unacceptable.
  • 2. Performs and oversees development of new assays and technology following CAP and CLIA regulatory requirements.
    • 2.1 Works with the Lab Director, the Clinical Molecular Specialist and the Section Coordinator to identify new assays and new technologies.
  • 3. Record keeping, Documentation, and Computer Skills: Provides for accurate documentation and reporting of results to ensure quality of patient care by demonstrating good computer and record keeping skills.
    • 3.1 Records results clearly, legibly and accurately, as soon as test is completed and documents and initials all patient results onto corresponding worklist.
  • 4. Independence/Initiative - Demonstrates self-reliance in one's thinking and action. Demonstrates independence by one's ability to evaluate culture integrity, problem solving, or trouble shooting instrumentation.
    • 4.1 Recognizes problems related to inappropriate outcome of procedures, notifies a supervisor of the existence of such a problem.
  • 5. Professionalism - Demonstrates professionalism at all times both in attitude and approach to work activities. Attempts to work well with all members of the hospital staff and our customer base. Demonstrates a commitment to personal career growth in the fields of Medical Technology and Molecular Biology.
    • 5.1 Demonstrates a positive approach to learning new or existing methods, techniques and/or procedures.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

 

Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology, Molecular Biology or equivalent with MT(ASCP) certification, MB(ASCP) certification or equivalent. MB(ASCP) certification preferred. Continuing education in a related discipline desirable.

 

EXPERIENCE

 

A minimum of 2 to 3 years clinical laboratory experience in a Molecular Diagnostics laboratory performing a wide variety of tests. At least one (1) year of experience in molecular assay development and validation is desirable.

 

LICENSURE

 

MT(ASCP) certification, MB(ASCP) certification or equivalent. MB(ASCP) certification preferred.

 

SPECIAL SKILLS

 

Strong knowledge of molecular principles and the ability to develop and validate clinical molecular assays according to CAP and CLIA guidelines.
