Performs a wide range of routine clinical laboratory analyses in the Virology Laboratory. Is able to recognize routine problems, identify causes, synthesize alternatives, and apply solutions. Confirms and verifies results through an in depth knowledge of techniques, principles, and instrumentation. Correlates and interprets data based on knowledge of technical, instrumental, and physiological conditions affecting test results. maintains and monitors a quality assurance program.

Responsibilities

  • 1. Performs a variety of routine clinical laboratory analyses to ensure that viruses present in clinical specimens can be grown and accurately identified. Independently capable of evaluating cultures for the presence of viral pathogens. Can reliably and accurately use confirmatory methods to correctly and promptly evaluate specimens. Ensures that all materials needed for successfully working in this area are available.
    • 1.1 Selects and performs tests for the isolation and identification of viruses and for the detection of viral antigens and antibodies, according to established protocol with accuracy and efficiency. Accurately interprets reactions knowing what factors may cause erroneous results. No more than two major errors that hold up the timeliness of reporting per year should be noted by the supervisor.
  • 2. Performs routine serological methods to assist in diagnosis of viral illnesses. Is capable of managing changing workload to ensure promptness and accuracy of results.
    • 2.1 Capable of performing routine automated viral serological testing in an efficient, accurate, and effective manner
  • 3. Performs routine qualitative and quantitative molecular diagnostic testing to aid in the diagnosis of viral infections. Work performed is efficient, accurate, and reliable. Is capable of effectively handling wide ranging workload volumes without significantly affecting the quality of testing.
    • 3.1 Capable of efficiently and accurately preparing samples for nucleic acid extraction. Demonstrates outstanding technique in preparing samples for extraction so as to ensure that minimal degradation and no cross-contamination of samples occurs.
  • 4. Provides for the reporting of laboratory results to ensure continuity of patient care.
    • 4.1 Provides data to appropriate person(s) each time a reportable disease agent is isolated according to the laboratory's notification policy before the end of the shift 95% of the time as observed by the supervisor.
  • 5. Demonstrates an in?depth theoretical knowledge of laboratory techniques, procedures, and instrumentation and of the operation and troubleshoot of instruments and procedures to ensure that clinical values are accurate.
    • 5.1 Validates test results by correlating clinical data, culture, and serologic results. Documents additional tests that may be necessary to verify that result according to established policy daily 95% of the time as observed by the supervisor.
  • 6. Instructs personnel, medical technology students, and clinical laboratory residents in all areas of Virology to ensure an understanding of basic principles of Virology and how they are applied in the Virology laboratory.
    • 6.1 Communicates effectively and maintains a positive, respectful interpersonal relationship with learners 90% of the time as observed by the supervisor and through learner feedback.
  • 7. Monitors the condition of equipment on a daily basis. Operates and maintains laboratory instruments to ensure the efficient operation of all laboratory equipment and instruments.
    • 7.1 Operates instruments and performs routine preventative maintenance following established protocol, as required 90% of the time as noted by the supervisor.
  • 8. Understands, implements,maintains, and assesses a quality assurance program to ensure that the best possible care can be provided for the patient.
    • 8.1 Performs proficiency testing accurately completing all required paperwork as assigned 100% of the time as observed by the supervisor.
  • 9. Demonstrates commitment to personal career growth and competency to ensure continued expertise and knowledge in the field of Virology and medical technology.
    • 9.1 Participates in Department of Laboratory medicine's Continuing Education Program by attending two Continuing Education sessions annually as documented by the administrative officer.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

 

Bachelor of Science Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent. MT (ASCP) certification, or equivalent, or eligibility preferred.

 

EXPERIENCE

 

One (1) to two (2) years of clinical laboratory experience preferred.

 

SPECIAL SKILLS

 

Working knowledge of equipment, instrumentation, and materials used in a Clinical Virology Laboratory. Knowledge of molecular methods highly recommended.
