    Lawrence + Memorial is a not-for-profit, general, acute care, private hospital that has been serving this region since 1912. We are licensed for 280 beds and provide patient care to medical, surgical, pediatric, rehab, psychiatric and obstetrical patients. Lawrence + Memorial Hospital offers a full service surgery program for both inpatient and outpatient procedures. All surgical procedures at L+M are performed by board-certified surgeons to ensure patient safety, comfort and the best possible outcomes.

    We offer same-day or next-day consultation appointments. Our surgeons apply the latest proven techniques and technologies, including minimally invasive surgery to reduce the size of an incision and reduce scarring after surgery. Our anesthesiologists also use the latest in targeted anesthesia applications so that your recovery is as pain-free and as fast as possible.


    The primary function of a Surgical Physician Assistant (PA) is to provide comprehensive care to patients in collaboration with physicians. Each PA has a designated supervising physician.     • Provides first and second assisting in General Surgery and other surgical subspecialties as needed and

      demonstrates proficiency in a variety of surgical techniques, depending on surgical specialty assigned,

      which includes but is not limited to knot tying, suturing, skin closure, sterile technique, maintaining

      exposure of the surgical site, laparoscopic surgical technique and anticipating surgeon needs.


      Performs specialized invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as credentialed or under the

      supervision of a physician procedures, including (but not limited to) dressing changes, minor wound

      care, suturing of minor wounds, drain advancement and removal, nasogastric tube placement, removal of

      central venous catheters, administration of local anesthetics, skin staple and suture removal, bladder

      catheterization (including re-insertion of suprapubic tubes), wound debridement, removal of chest tubes,

      arterial punctures, venipunctures for intravenous administration or blood sampling, reinsertion of

      gastrostomy tubes.


      Physician Assistants will rotate in surgical physician assistant call schedule including coverage of

      Obstetric c-section assists


      Rounds daily on assigned patients and has the primary responsibility for documenting the patient's

      status, data assessment and plan of care. Regularly communicates concise but complete patient

      information on patient status and pertinent test results to surgeons and consulting physician(s) as



      Develops treatment plans in consultation with the supervising physician(s) based on initial and ongoing

      assessment of patients, medical, physical, and psychological status.


      Implements physician-directed treatment plans including writing or phoning orders for medications,

      treatments, tests, IV fluids, etc. and interpret normal and abnormal findings.


    • Assists physician(s) with patient care, has primary responsibility for medical record documentation and

      related paperwork and ordering of tests/procedures and sub-specialty consultations.


      May assist with contacting patients' primary care physician.For new admissions, obtains

      comprehensive health histories, performs complete physical examinations, enters admission orders for

      appropriate laboratory and diagnostic imaging tests, and completes orders for therapy under the

      supervision of Physician(s).

    • Communicates patient treatment plans to social workers, care coordinators and health care agencies

      and serves as a liaison and interacts with ancillary services to ensure timely and comprehensive care for

      all patients.


      Provides patient education and counseling regarding health status, test results, disease processes, and

      discharge planning. Completes discharge paperwork when applicable, including the W-10 and

      prescriptions and the discharge summary. Reviews discharge instructions with patients and nursing at

      time of discharge. Coordinates outpatient follow-up.


      Serves as a liaison to patients and their families.

      Shares the responsibility of carrying the Surgicalist phone on a rotating basis with other team members

      as determined by the departmental needs.


      Collects all paperwork associated with the daily sign-out process and ensures that patient sign-outs are

      updated either in EPIC or on paper for all general surgical patients by shift end.


    • Assists in the care of in-house surgical patients, ensuring safe and efficient care.

    • Performs post-operative evaluations on in house patient as needed

      Physician Assistants will conduct office hours in the NEMG General Surgery office for patients referred

      from the emergency room for evaluation and consultation and for post -op global patients.


      Documents a brief post-op note within 24 hours in EPIC for any procedure invasive procedure performed

      or on which they have assisted. Note will include documentation of PA role in procedure, ie exposure,

      retraction, dissection, wound closure, etc...


      Identifies healthcare needs and assesses the status of patient's and coordinates post-discharge

      follow-up care.


      Displays commitment to ongoing development of surgical skills and knowledge. Promotes the

      dissemination of the newest clinical evidence in literature to improve patient care.





    Graduation from an accredited Physician Associate program required. Certified as a Physician Associate by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Associates. Both hold a valid Connecticut medical license, Connecticut Controlled Substance Registration and Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Certification.




    One (1) to two (2) years caring for patients preferred.




    Excellent clinical, interpersonal and organizational skills. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.




    MMR is required. Varivax (chicken pox vaccine) or evidence of prior chicken pox is required. Hepatitis B (or signed declination) is required for those with potential exposure to blood/body fluids. Tdap and influenza vaccination are strongly encouraged.
